Kathy Kirkpatrick will speak on Italian Concentration Camps During World War II

Kathy Kirkpatrick earned her B.A. in History from Humboldt State University at Arcata, California. Ms. Kirkpatrick is a past president of the Salt Lake Chapter (now the Utah chapter) of the Association of Professional Genealogists. She is currently President of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Utah.

The fifty-seven known locations of Concentration Camps run by Fascists in Italy, more or less in cooperation with the German Nazis, were usually smaller than the Camps we are familiar with in the rest of Europe. They also ran a range from one death camp to work camps to one camp recently described as the “anti-Auschwitz” camp because of the care given to Jewish prisoners there. The camp locations and stories are presented, with an emphasis on the positive experiences in this dark time in history. Photos of the camps and prisoners, stories of their experiences, and documentation are included in the presentation with guidance to the archives which contain the sources. Handout will be available at UJGS.org

Board Meeting

I propose a board meeting on 7 August. Will board members please let me know if this doesn’t fit their schedules? Also, this is NOT a closed meeting. We especially want to invite folks interested in becoming officers and committee heads since elections will be held in the Fall.

Research Assistance Needed

I received a request as follows:

I am looking to find some information about my 19th century great great grandparents in Kishinev. I believe there might be info. in the Mormon library. I live in Israel.and we have no Mormon libraries here, so I’m looking for someone in Utah who could help me.

If you can help, please let me know and I will forward you his contact information.

Thanks!

Janette Silverman will speak on “In the Aftermath”. After World War II, refugees all over Europe lived in Displaced Persons Camps, sometimes for years. Some who wanted to leave Europe were permitted to relocate fairly quickly, for many, the journey away from continental Europe was arduous. We will discuss how to find information about refugees arriving in the United States and track them into records to find out what happened to them during the war. Some of the documentation will reveal their parents’ names & birthplaces. As an example of what can be found, we’ll look at one specific family’s journey. Although the family we will look at ultimately arrived in the U.S., their journey could have taken them anywhere.
